The analysis of collections and publications that have been transmitted by the architects of the Grand Tour permits to grasp the challenge that constitutes the representation of an ancient city, which is to be reproduced by drawing. Several Pompeii collections have been examined, in particular notebooks by the “topographer” William Gell, kept in the INHA Library.
A publication is forthcoming : H. Dessales, H. Dessales, Recueils de William Gell. Pompéi publiée et inédite (1801-1829), Paris, (...)

This program focuses on one of the very first buildings excavated on the site of Pompeii, between 1771 and 1775, the Villa of Diomedes, which was mostly described and depicted by the travelers of the “Grand Tour”. Since 2012, thanks to the structuring programmePSL « Pompeii 3D », and with the partnership of the Parco archeologico di Pompei, a multidisciplinary program has been aimed at reconstructing its entire evolution, combining the material fabrication of a Roman villa with its (...)

Initiated in January 2015, and nearing completion, the collaborative program RECAP (Post-earthquake Reconstruction Ancient experiments and innovations at Pompeii) aims to study the reconstruction of a city following an earthquake, through the particular case of Pompeii. The program associates four main partners, the AOROC laboratory (UMR 8546), the Inria (UMR 8538), the IPGP (UMR 7154) and the CJB (USR 3133) and four collaborators, the Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II (...)
